Introduction
The Ford Super Duty is a series of heavy-duty pickups that have been produced by the automaker and are an expansion of its F-Series. The Super Duty allows for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. Let’s break each generation down, so you can see how far Super Duty has come from the first generation of the truck.
Fifth Generation Ford Super Duty (2023-Present)
The fifth-generation Ford Super Duty is the latest iteration of this powerful pickup. It retains much of the bells and whistles of the previous generation while incorporating significant improvements in design and tech. The Super Duty’s four engine options remain the same from 2023—all are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
- 6.8-liter V8 (400 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque)
- 7.3-liter V8 (430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque)
- 6.7-liter Turbodiesel V8 (475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque)
- 6.7-liter Turbodiesel HO V8 (500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque)
The Super Duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 are available in six trims each—XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. No matter which you choose, the Super Duty is known for its towing prowess: When properly equipped the Ford Super Duty:
- F-250 can tow up to 23,000 pounds
- F-350 can tow up to 21,000 pounds
- F-450 can tow up to 40,000 pounds
All Super Duty models feature adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and an integrated trailer brake controller for towing cargo safely.
Fourth Generation Ford Super Duty (2017-2022)
This generation of Super Duty saw its most significant redesign since it was introduced in 1998. Its frame was constructed from high-strength steel, to make it lighter but more rigid. With an aluminum body, its reduced weight helped to improve fuel efficiency. Its interior was given an overhaul for greater comfort and functionality.
The same five trim levels—the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum—and engine options we see in the fifth generation are included here.
Third Generation Ford Super Duty (2011-2016)
The Super Duty’s third generation had a bolder and more modern exterior design. Its interior was revamped with higher-quality materials and improved tech. This generation of Super Duty introduced the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel engine, as the standard 6.4L was discontinued. The 5.4L Triton V8 gas engine remained. The King Ranch trim was introduced, as was the Platinum, alongside the existing three trims.
Second Generation Ford Super Duty (2008-2010)
The 6.4L Power Stroke V8 diesel engine was introduced with the Super Duty’s redesign in 2008. Its exterior was designed with a more bold and more aggressive look—the front grille became more prominent, and the pickup’s overall styling reflected the Super Duty’s increased power. The interior received a new instrument cluster, center dash bezel, interior door panels, and steering wheel.
First Generation Ford Super Duty (1999-2007)
Where it all began. The Super Duty was designed with work in mind and was a big departure from Ford’s F-Series trucks. This pickup had a stronger frame, beefier axles, and more powerful engines. With plenty of power behind its 5.4L Triton V8, 6.8L Triton V10 (gas) engine and its 7.3L PowerStroke Turbodiesel V8, it quickly gained a reputation as a towing juggernaut.
